The Rise & Fall of Comrade Zylo
Political Satire / Dir: Fatmir Koçi / Albania, Kosovo, Ireland / 119' / 2022
World Premiere Tallinn Black Nights – Critics Pick Selection
“This dark comedy definitely holds the same level as comic masterpieces like the brilliant Ernst Lubitsch's “To Be or Not to Be”, Billy Wilder’s “One, Two, Three” , Roberto Benigni’s “La vita è bella” and ..Cristian Mungiu’s “4 Months”.” NIKI NIKITIN
“Its topic and tone should go down well with audiences who have
some historical knowledge about life under the communist
dictatorship, while its purely filmic references to noir and the
Nouvelle Vague work equally well in all contexts”

Synopsis:
Adaptation of a critically acclaimed Albanian novel, the narrative, set in
the 70s during the Soviet Regime, focuses on the exploits of Comrade
Zylo, a bureaucrat at the Ministry of Culture.
To impress his superiors and party members, Comrade Zylo manipulates
Demka, an aspiring frustrated author to write on his behalf phenomenal
speeches and reports based on Zylo's wildly improbable theories of what
is Proletariat Culture, and how to bring Culture to the Proletariat.
