Synopsis:
Set in different time frames the narrative focuses on Juliana, a young
University student at the turn of the millennium, an illegitimate daughter of
an estranged Army Commander of whom she learns after his death,
reading the memoirs of a leftwing activist, Joao, who had been ambushed
and tortured by her father in a guerrilla operation in the Araguaia region
during the repressive Military Dictatorship in Brazil in the late 60’s.
The book reveals Joao’s encounter in prison, whilst suffering the harshest
torture, with an Evangelical priest, and how their proximity juxtaposed their
unwavering convictions about Social Justice. In one hand the Pastor’s
belief in Providence, in the other, Joao’s belief in armed struggle as the
ultimate means to achieve social Justice.
